Dunn Peak Protected Area (Map 8/G7)

Open Map A

Hiker As a wilderness area, the 19,353 hectare Dunn Peak Protected Area contains a marvelous collection of remote mountain terrain, including the 2,633 m (8,638 ft) high Dunn Peak. There are almost no developed trails within this area, making for a true wilderness backcountry experience. The only known developed trail, the Brigade Trail, can be found along the west side of Mount Fennell. The route is quite rough although it does help hikers to access the remote stretches of the Dunn Peak. All travelers in this region should be experienced backcountry trippers and prepared for alpine weather conditions throughout the year. An interesting side trip that lies just outside of the boundary of the protected area is the trip up to the lookout on Baldy Mountain. An old forestry road can be picked up off Dunn Lake Road near the north end of Dunn Lake. The road may not be passable by 4wd vehicle so it makes a great hiking/ATV route.

Open Map A

To find the Baldy Mountain Trail, follow Highway 97 north from Quesnel to Stoner. Off the east side of the highway, take the Stone Creek Forest Service Road to the junction with the Baldy Mountain Road. Depending on how far you can drive and how far you ramble when in the alpine, the trail is at least 5 km long. Both hikers and snowmobilers will find the Baldy Mountain area an enjoyable place to visit. Due to the remote location and the elevation gain, expect a moderate hike or ride.

Taweel Provincial Park (Map 8/C4)

Open Map C

Hikers on a trail The 4,558 hectare Taweel Provincial Park can be accessed via a gravel road from Highway 24, 20 km northwest of Little Fort. The access road has been deactivated and is very rough if not impossible to drive. The access road to the southeast shore of Taweel Lake is privately owned and controlled by the resorts on the lake. The limited access helps maintain the good fishing in the lakes in the area. Although there are no facilities at this park, wilderness camping is permitted. Rough trails also lead from Taweel Lake to many of the smaller lakes, such as Johnny Lake and Doris Lake. Be sure to respect the private property of the cabins and resorts on Taweel Lake

Upper Adams River Provincial Park (Map 10/A6-E1-17/E7)

No referring map

With 5,733 hectares of protected terrain, the Upper Adams River Provincial Park helps preserve over 65 km of important river floodplain. The park stretches from just north of Adams Lake to near Tumtum Lake. Although a good logging road travels alongside the majority of the park length, providing access to the river in several areas, the park is really only accessible by canoe or kayak. The scenery along this river is truly fantastic, as the river flows through a remote valley bordered closely by various mountains, including the Seymour Range. There are no facilities at this remote park but it is possible to pitch camp along the river in several areas. If you do intend to paddle the Upper Adams River, it is recommended to have big river experience and to scout all obstacles.
